Many years ago, when I was still living on a little ranch in Texas, a Quarter Horse gelding named Sonny came into my life. My then husband had bought him off the internet, and we waited in trepidation to see if the gamble would pay off.

The day he arrived, I was waiting at the barn, expecting a trailer to come up the hill and down the road when a woman on a big, red horse built like the proverbial brick house came thundering up through the pasture instead. Slamming him to a stop at the fence, she yanked and pulled him around to get through the gate and pointed to the nearby arena.

“This is Sonny. I thought we’d make an entrance and show you what he can do.”
